Aalwar

Another Ajith-Asin flick to add to the list.
Asin is the chirpy bubbly daughter of Manorama, who rents out a 'palace' to people, most of whom are men. Although many guys are vying for her, she is interested in Ajith, who is very quiet and doesn't even pay her any attention.
One day, the whole house is watching the news of children who were killed in a smuggling attack and crying. When Ajith watches it, he is on the next bus to the spot. When he gets there, he kills the man responsible in a God's outfit. Police aren't able to track the killer, but the cop questions troupe artistes, who put such costumes for a livelihood.
Back in his rental apartment, Asin is trying her best to get Ajith attention. She gets her doctor friend to lie for her and Ajith attitude towards her softens.
Meanwhile, Ajith tries an murder attempt on the villain and misses the shot at the cop, who is on the lookout for him. After a chase, the cop is only able to find out that he works at GH, but his suspicions are on Ajith. But his sister, who works as a doctor in the hospital, introduces Ajith as the guy who saved her life.
With another murder in the city, the cop is agitated. But his sister provides him with a witness and claims the murderer seemed something like Ajith.
The cop uses the burnt card, that told him the murderer was from GH, to find out the face of the murderer. And after every possibility points to Ajith, he sets out to get him.
Meanwhile, Ajith finds out that Asin had been lying and hits her. When Asin comes back and professes her love, he goes back to his flashback.
He was a temple priest in a village. He lived happily with his mother and sister. He did anything for his sister. His belief in God was great and when he heard one of the speeches saying that each human is a form of God, he is perplexed. When he tells this to his mother, his mother explains the reason Ajith was named Aalwar. Over the days, Ajith witnesses one of the members of the temple's truth breaking into the box with holy donations. He opposes them and gets threatened with his mother's and daughter's life. Even though he keeps quiet, the bad guys get caught and they suspect his family and fatally injure and kill them, but only he was left alive by the drain that came out of God's cleansing rituals.
Since then Ajith had been hardening himself for avenging his family's death. That's when the cops come in and arrest him. After held in captivity for some time, Ajith escapes and takes his revenge. They leave the story open with a twist at the end.
The movie had shades of Saamy and Gajini, with the action and violence sequences. An OK movie, nothing extraordinary in the storyline. Sometimes, it seemed like Ajith was overacting, especially as the priest and really Asin didn't have much to do.

Godfather - varalaaru

Ajith Kumar in a triple role with Asin, Sujatha, Kanika, Santhanam and Paandu come together in this K.S.Ravikumar flick.
Father Ajith (FA) is a millionnaire cripple, with an only son Ajith (SA). SA is frivolous and easy going and one such act, in a rural village, he wants to have fun with the ladies, after he and his friends were misinformed about the character of the village. But after hearing the heartwrenching story of Asin, he decides to marry her, but finds out everything was a hoax. He returns to the city.
FA seeing his son sad, decides to find the girl and get him married. After this point, things start going really crazy in the household. FA withdraws money from ABM at night and lies to his father. He gets excessively drunk and misbehaves in Asin's house. He tries to kill his father and ends up killing one of his servants. Although, the next moment, SA remembers nothing of the incident.
Everyone starts believing he is suffering from some disease, but when he is staying at the hospital, SA discovers there is another guy who looks exactly like him - twin Ajith (TA). When SA rushes home, he also finds out that FA is not crippled. He is shocked to find out his father was lying to him all along.
Flashback comes here. FA was a famous dancer, but dance was so absorbed into him that he could only walk and do actions gracefully. For this reason, people often thought something was wrong with him. Eventually, he got a match with his mother's friend's, Sujatha's, daughter, Kanika. Since his mother's friend was confident about her daughter, he accepted, yet, on the day of the marriage, Kanika walks out on the marriage and FA's mother dies.
In revenge, he rapes Kanika. He is repentant later and tries to reconcile, but Kanika refuses to admit him in her life. She tries her best to abort the pregnancy, but with Sujatha planning otherwise, she gives birth to a baby. Having the only blood relation in the world, FA takes the child away to bring it up. But since he didn't want his son to feel the ridicule, he did, he confines himself to a wheelchair, even though he is a dancer.
SA forgives his father and now they stay on the lookout for TA. Here comes TA's flashback (or might have been earlier). TA's mother is Kanika, who has lost her senses and she knows nothing other than her son. But she is not in the right mind to protect herself from the prying eyes of men or to survive. So since a young age, TA is the one taking care of his mother from bringing food to bathing her. He went through a lot of trouble and all along assumes that his father was a bad man, who deserted Kanika, after he impregnated her. And now he is out for revenge and he was the one who had cleverly planned to create the scene such that it seemed SA was doing it all along.
In the final scene, when the marriage is about to happen, TA comes in to disrupt the occasion. But Sujatha reaches right on time to explain the rest of the flashback. After FA left with the baby that day, a second twin was born, whom Sujatha and Kanika brought up. After a few years, Sujatha told Kanika the truth about having 2 babies. Kanika is remorseful and wants to reconcile with FA, but that day, she witnesses an accident that could have killed her baby and loses her senses. While getting Kanika and TA back to FA, Kanika runs away with TA and Sujatha had been hunting them ever since.
FA is killed in a misunderstanding in the end. TA is taken to a facility, while the rest live in FA's house.
The ending was really cheesy with literally, everybody, except the director, the cameraman and the light guy in a huge group, getting Kanika to eat with so many plates. What would they do with plates that Kanika would not have eaten from? If that was real food, that was really wasteful. they could have bowlfuls of coloured water, but even water is rare in Tamil Nadu!
The story seemed OK, although the initial scenes with a frivolous Ajith could have been avoided, as he is not really a frivolous guy. And some of the scenes with a mental Kanika and the little boy was a little annoying - cause a little kid could probably never pull that off. And, really how could have Sujatha slept through while a whole baby (which she was probably clutching tight) was being taken away from her, especially, when she sort of knew her daughter was mental. But anyway, the story was entertaining enough and music by A.R.Rahman was melodious, but not impressive.

Unnaalae Unnaalae

With Vinay, Sada and Tanisha, the movie is about a triangle love story.
Vinay and Sada were lovers in the past. Because of Sada's possessive nature and Vinay's frivolous nature, Sada breaks off. They meet again yonder over the seas, with Tanisha as a common friend. Tanisha now begins to love Vinay. Promising to help him get back together with Sada, Tanisha plays to make Vinay fall for herself. Eventually, Sada moves away from both of them and Vinay and Tanisha marry.
The movie was very reminiscent of Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho and a mix of some weak and vague storyline. In fact, I should say there was no storyline. I missed the first 20 minutes of the movie and even after I started watching, I had no questions to ask as movie hadn't even moved since I came. And the rest of the
All the actors seemed to be there because they were signed up for the movie and in some form of an obligation, more than wanting to act. And honestly, I felt like punching the hero when he started having some excessive mudra action while saying his dialogues.
On the whole, a very slow movie with almost no storyline. The music was tolerable to listen to, but other than that, there is nothing to look out for. Skip it..

Veyyil

Performed by Bharath, Pasupathi, Bhavana and many other new comers, Veyyil meaning sunlight, is the story of a man, whose life becomes a turning point, when he burns in the sun.
Pasupathi and Bharath are sons of a butcher. They are united and grow up together. Pasupathi is crazy about movies and one day, while he sneakily watching a movie, his father embarrasses him in front of the whole village, by making him lie down in the sun, without a piece of cloth on.
That night, the child runs away from home, with all the money and jewels he could lay his hands on. On the way, he stops by a village and gets attracted by the movie show again. He watches the movie and sleeps by a public shelter. The next morning, he loses all his belongings. With nothing to do, he wanders, until he meets an employee of the movie theatre. With the employee, he starts working at the theatre. As a young man, he considers the theatre his home.
He falls in love with the daughter of a neighbouring shopkeeper. They spend happy times together, until an accident causes their parents to know. They prepare to marry off the girl. In defiance, the lovers plan to elope but get caught and in a brawl, the girl kills herself. Right after that, the movie theatre business starts going down and Pasupathi is retrenched. With nothing in hand, Pasupathi returns to the house he ran away from.
His father refuses to accept him, but his brother takes him back home. His mother is overjoyed. He meets his two younger sisters, he never knew existed. Although he lives in their house, except for his brother, and at times his mother, no one else treated him well. He is most grieved. But he finds some solace in his childhood sweetheart, who is now without a husband (something like a divorcee).
Bharath, by now, has established a successful advertising business. And he was mostly the reason why the family was doing well today. He has fond memories of his brother and had lots of affection for him. In his business, he has a strong rival.
When the eldest of the sisters is about to be married, a misunderstanding occurs when the jewels go missing. When Pasupathi returns home, he goes through another round of insult with his father and mother calling him a thief. When the bride-to-be returns home, she returns with the jewels that she had taken to show her friend. Although the rest of the family is remorseful, Pasupathi's father leaves the scene. After expressing his feelings to him, Pasupathi decides to leave for elsewhere.
Bharath, on hearing that his brother is missing, leaves to search for him. His rival starts attacking him. When he is greviously injured and is hiding, he sees his brother. Without care for his life, he runs calling out for him. Seeing the state of his brother, Pasupathi defends and saves him.
Although he admits Bharath in the hospital, doctors say it is hard for anything to be said. Pasupathi leaves with vengeance to finish the rival. The ending of the movie was really touching and telling that here would definitely kill the entire suspense.
One of the best recent movies I have seen. Even though it was village based, it wasn't entirely in some old dialect that no one understood. Neither were there excessive scenes of rurality that makes one think if they have transcended a few ages back.
Awesome performance by Pasupathi and Bharath. Both showed a lot of potential when they started their careers in Virumandi and Boys, respectively, and have now come a long way. Definitely worth a watch.

American Pie 3

The third movie in the series, is the wedding between Jim and Michelle.
So the two have been going out for a while. Jim pops the question, and Michelle says yes and the entire movie spans over how the wedding is planned and carried out.
The fun comes in the part where Jim tries to avoid having Stifler, but her ends up coming anyway. Jim wants Michelle to have the perfect wedding and he tries his best to do lots of things for her, which was really sweet to watch. At the same time, the very presence of Stifler means trouble. Apart from that, Stifler acts as a nice guy to do it with Michelle's sister, which competing with Finch, but does it with Jim's grumpy grandmother instead.
With all the trouble and craziness, the wedding runs well and happily.
This was probably the least crude - probably cause the guys were a little more mature and Stifler was mostly acting as the nice guy. An OK movie to watch.

American Pie 2

The cast and crew from the first movie comes together again to give this sequel to the previous movie.
Now the boys have moved onto college and it is their summer in college. They return to their old neighbourhood and discover the changed view of things. None of them have had any experience at 'it' since their prom night, save one guy who has a girlfriend.
(with reference to the post on American Pie)
Guy 2 feels that the whole life seems changed. So he gets advice from a fellow mate to live in a cottage near the beach and have fun together.
So the guys head over with the troublesome, filthy mouthed jock, because they can't afford it themselves. They learn many things at the end of the summer and Guy 1 even gets a girlfriend (although he spurns a girl he has been having a crush for a long time).
Again, a corny spiel of what guys do when they get together. Definitely the humour was there, but I could have laughed just as much with suggestive things than explicit shows.
The few scenes where Michelle is teaching Jim with how to behave around women, was pretty funny and even surprising. But those are funny to watch out for, just when Nadia is about to visit Jim.

Spiderman 2.1

The team comes together once again for the sequel to Spiderman.
Life is really tough for Peter with all the juggling being a superhero and the jobs and studying. At one point in time, he seems to be so tired and uninspired to be the hero, that his web doesn't spin anymore. He is also not able to attend MJ's show.
Meanwhile, he attends a major scientist's breakthrough with a powerful and environment friendly energy source. He witnesses the experiment and demonstration go wrong. While the scientist is being given treatment, he becomes a villain with arms attached to him.
He proceeds to re-create his lab and needs to get the energy source from Harry. He makes a deal with Harry to kill Spiderman in exchange for the energy source.
Spiderman has second thoughts about being a hero. When Peter sees MJ being engaged to someone else and him not being able to get his love, he is most dejected. He throws away the costume, figuratively throwing away the Spiderman in him. Now he is just Peter Parker and he seems to be happy with who he is. He also confides in his aunt about what truly happened that night when Uncle Ben died. Although there comes a small bitterness between them, things patch up and with a little pep up talk, Peter regains Spiderman.
MJ is also having second thoughts about her engagement. She invites Peter to talk. During this talk, Dr.Octavius interrupts them, questioning Peter about Spiderman and kidnaps MJ. To rescue her back, Peter meets the villain as Spiderman.
In a bid to save the train passengers, who end up being the victims in the fight between Spiderman and Octavius, Peter loses the mask and many people end up seeing who he really is. Octavius manages to get a wounded Spiderman back to Harry.
Octavius gets his energy source and just when Harry is about to kill Spiderman, he is shocked to find out that Peter is actually Spiderman. Even though he is most disturbed, Harry lets him go to save the world, which Spiderman does. MJ also discovers who Spiderman is.
The movie ends when Harry discovers his father's secret goblin lab and MJ returning to Peter, ready to face all dangers with him.
The movie was fast paced and full of effects, as a Spiderman movie. I found personal experience come into play when Peter was trying to judge who should he be and whom should he satisfy. I think that is a mystery that everyone faces in life, especially during the growing up years.
It is interesting to see how MJ is just constantly having men around her and then breaking their hearts or just never noticing them. Perhaps, she should be taking some lessons in how to stick to people. But an alright movie to watch.

Raaja raajan

M.G.R., Padmini, Lalitha, M.N.Nambiar and Veerappa come together again with the others in another movie with royalties and hunger for power.
Veerappa captures M.G.R. to kill him, while he spreads rumours about him as a bad prince. People believe the rumours and don't question M.G.R.'s disappearance. However M.G.R. escapes with the help of Veerappa's sister, Lalitha.
M.G.R. stays in hiding while Veerappa prances around as a good minister. Veerappa approaches the just king of the nearby kingdom, as he was a good friend of the old king. Even though he doesn't feel good about helping run M.G.R.'s kingdom, the king agrees to it.
Meanwhile, M.G.R. meets the king's daughter, Padmini and the queen, while in hiding and plays a prank on them. With more meetings, they fall in love with each other.
M.G.R. gets help from the tribal people and lives with them for a while. After a while, he decides to leave the king a note in disguise. Although the king feels annoyed at his mode of communication, he starts to re-consider if he should be ruling over M.G.R. kingdom. Veerappa is alerted. Meanwhile, the king overhears Veerappa's true intentions. Veerappa, realising the situation holds the royal family in captivity.
Now he plays the royal family and the king ends up getting sentenced. Although he is taken to be executed, he is saved.
Lalitha is also in love with M.G.R., but she has not yet told him. Considering the commander to her brother to be a relatively decent man, Lalitha tries to change Nambiar's mind and when that happens, she brings M.G.R. and Nambiar together. She confides her love in M.G.R., but he refuses to accept her. However, she spurns Nambiar's love for her. Angered at his cause of failure, Nambiar calls for a duel with M.G.R. Lalitha gets injured during the duel, while she was about to bring the news of uproar in the city.
The cause of the uproar was attack by the tribal people that M.G.R. was previously staying with. Having their own plan of action, they attacked Veerappa. In the end all ends happy.
Sometimes along the movie, I was just wondering why some incident was happening. Sometimes, I thought I had lost the story and the plot. The movie felt like bits and pieces put together. There wasn't any great song to watch other than one song that was performed together by both Padmini and Lalitha. Other than that, one could skip this movie.

Mannathi mannan

Makkal thilakam M.G.R. comes along with Padmini, Anjala Devi, Chakrabani and Veerappa in this movie.
Padmini is the student of an ambitious dance teacher. Proud about her achievements, she takes part in a dance competition. Veerappa encourages the competition, while M.G.R. tries to prevent it. In the end, M.G.R., who is the crown-prince ends up competing with Padmini. As expected, M.G.R. wins.
To catch up with her dance skills, Padmini requests M.G.R. to teach her dance and he agrees. Overtime, they fall in love. Veerappa, interested in getting Padmini, spreads the news about the lovers to the king. The king decides to hunt for a bride and sends a proposal to the neighbouring king Chakrabani.
Since the crown-prince was born out of a woman of a different caste, Chakrabani refuses. When M.G.R. hears of this, he is enraged and vows to kidnap Chakrabani's daughter in revenge. He reaches the neighbouring kingdom, assuming a false name and works in the royal household. The princess, Anjala Devi falls in love with him.
Meawhile, Veerappa is lusting after Padmini, but she awaits her love. But her fear grows in not being able to meet her lover forever. Veerappa also sends a precautionary note to Chakrabani about the crown-prince's plans. The same day, M.G.R. decides to kidnap Anjala. But the soldiers stop his way and fight ensues.
M.G.R. manages to escape and return to his kingdom, only to find Padmini willingly gone to Veerappa's tent. He agrees to marry Anjala Devi. He returns to Anjala's kingdom and there he finds out the truth through Padmini's friend. Although he is anxious to return, he is forced to stay for celebrations. He is mersmerized by one of the dancers who looks like Padmini and ends up having an accident.
He is rescued by some ascetics, one of whom is Padmini. But his wife and her family think he is dead. Some sixth sense in Anjala brings the both of them together. M.G.R. finds out that his saviour is Padmini and rushes to save her. But Veerappa returns to compete with him, while Padmini tries to commit suicide. Even though M.G.R. rescues her, she dies in the end.
My only reason to watch this movie was the awesome song 'Aadaatha manamum undo' - definitely a visual and audio treat. This was definitely one of the old movies where M.G.R. shone and was his best. There were some other good songs too - kalaiyodu kalanthathu unmai, neeyo naano yaar nilave. An OK movie to watch.

Pokiri

Vijay, Asin, Nazar, Prakash Raj and others come together in this action movie about an uncover cop working as a thug.
Vijay is one of the hard criminals in the area, but he is good to people, who truly are in need. His fame spread wide to the professional thugs, who invite him to be part of them. He carries out the tasks needed with perfection and gains their trust. He is also the cause for a major brawl between 2 leading dons. The next day, one of the thugs ends up dead. Word on the street in that the other don had killed him.
Asin is the working daughter in a family without a father. A local inspector with vile intentions eyes her and lusts for her. He behaves inappropriately with her and in time, Vijay helps her out of some tough situations. But the inspector finds her house and keeps threatening her family. With frequent meetings between Vijay and Asin, they fall in love, but he keeps the distance. Eventually he tells her about his true profession, and they decide to stick together, even though she is appalled at his work.
The leader, of the don who dies, comes to India and meets Vijay. As a surprise during one of their meets, an honest cop arrests the leader, Prakash Raj. In a bid to get him back, his group kidnaps the cop's daughter and makes a blue film out of his daughter. Although the cop is not able to do anything, Prakash Raj gets out free. He finds out from the hostage girl that their is a cop undercover their group. He presses the lusty cop to find out who it is and they trace it to one of Vijay's buddies.
Prakash Raj takes him to his father and kills the son, but finds out it is not the son, he was looking for. In his want to find the other son, he kills the father, Nazar. As expected, the son drops by but the group is shocked to find out that it had been Vijay.
Knowing the working of the thugs inside out, Vijay tracks out the hideout of Prakash Raj and beings justice.
The movie was moderately fast paced - a good attempt by Prabhu Deva with his direction. Obviously the dance steps were cool, although the music wasn't outstanding. I couldn't keep track of how many murders Vijay had done in the movie. It seemed like murder count was like time count in the movie. But nevertheless, for justice, many have to killed to clean the place up. An OK movie worth the watch.

Spiderman 1

The starting movie that had the adventures of Spiderman on screen. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, William Dafoe and others come together in this movie.
Parker is a nerd, with the school newspaper and a huge crush on Mary Jane, his neighbour, ever since she moved in. He is frequently teased and bullied. Sometimes, Mary Jane saves him, sometimes his friend Harry. He lives with his uncle and aunt, Ben and May, who have been there for him as long as he can remember.
A science trip becomes a turning point, when a genetically modified spider gives Parker a bite. Parker becomes sick and the next day, he notices positive transformations in him. He is ecstatic, until an incident at school makes him wonder what has changed within him. He is joyous to find out the change and keeps it a secret from everybody.
To impress MJ, he decides to take part in a fighting challenge. When Uncle Ben drops him off with a man-to-man talk, Parker hurts his feelings. At the end of the challenge, Parker neglects to stop the thief, who minutes later, Parker finds out, to be the person who killed Uncle Ben. Parker is vengeful and takes his revenge.
Parker realises his uncle's last words to him and decides to become the saviour of the city, stopping small scale wrong doings.
Meanwhile, Harry's father, Norman Osbourne is undergoing great pressure in his company. He develops methods to strengthen an individual and ends up trying it out on himself. Strangely, after that everything seems to work fine and things are falling in place, but there are also deaths around. Norman discovers, he has an alter ego - the Green Goblin.
Harry and MJ go out and although Parker is disappointed, he still supports them and becomes MJ's best friend. The day when MJ is about to meet Norman, Goblin comes by and wreaks havoc. Spiderman comes to the rescue. Goblin offers partnership with Spiderman, which he refuses. Finally, Goblin attacks Spiderman for spurning him.
That night, the Osbournes and Parkers come together for a family dinner and Norman finds out the identity of Parker. He leaves suddenly, also throwing bad words at MJ. MJ is heartbroken and the lovebirds separate.
Aunt May is attacked and Parker understands that his identity is no more a secret. He is protective of his aunt and realises MJ could be in trouble and his hunch seems right. After rescuing her, a fight follows between Spiderman and Goblin, at the end of which Goblin dies by his own cause.
Parker, knowing the identity of Goblin is remorseful and silently leaves his body in the Osbourne's house. Harry sees him and is vengeful thinking Spiderman killed his father.
A good engrossing movie worth the watch.

Shrek 3

Finally I managed to catch the long awaited sequel of Shrek, with the cast coming together for another blast.
Just when the ogre family is about to return to swamp, Fiona's father becomes very ill and they are temporarily asked to handle the matters of the state. Shrek 'handles them' without much success. Unfortunately, Fiona's father dies of illness, naming another possible heir to the throne.
Shrek, in his bid to return to normality, sets out with his trusted camaderie to find Arthur, the next king. Before his departure, Fiona tells him that she is pregnant. All along the way, Shrek is put through nightmare of babies.
While Shrek is away, Prince Charming is frustrated with his lowly life and decides to get the throne that was his all along. With a undercover partner, he manages to capture the nice royal ladies, while preparing a plan to kill Shrek.
Shrek manages to find Arthur and they start for Far Far Away. On the way, Arthur is put through the true state of royalties and he panics. During the commotion, the ship crashes and they are stranded. But they meet Arthur's magic teacher and he transports them back to their land.
Shrek finds the state of Far Far Away through Pinocchio and they almost escape, but fall into Prince Charming's hands. Meanwhile, Fiona and the other's escape, only to get recaptured because of Charming's spy.
Finally Charming executes his plan in killing Shrek, but things take a turn and all ends happily with Arthur becoming the king and Shrek and Fiona returning to their swamp and starting a family.
I loved Shrek 1 and noticed that the Shrek 2 went down a bit. Although Shrek wasn't as good as 1, it was better than 2. Definitely worth the watch, but I don't know if it was memorable. The scene where the old frog king is dying was hilarious as was the transposition of the cat and donkey.

Spiderman 3

Expectations were high considering I had heard totally mixed reviews about the movie. On one hand I had heard it was really good and on the other as very cheesy. Having seen the movie, I would say it depends on what you expected of the movie when you went in. Special effects were definitely amazing and considering there were 3 villains in the movie, there was a lot of work for Spiderman and fighting.
So Peter and MJ are together now and they are very much in love. Peter is considering proposing to MJ. But MJ is having a tough time with her career and work. She is fired and is not doing well. But she is not able to share this with Peter, who is much elated by his status as Spiderman. She feels a strange distance growing between them.
The strangeness in Peter is because of a new evil black thing that seems to display parasitic properties that makes the host have negative thoughts. Peter ends up feeling gratified in doing things that aren't good.
At the same time, things aren't well with Harry and Peter. Now that Harry knows the truth and having discovered his father's equipments, Harry is out to take revenge on Peter. On one of these fights, he severely injures his head that he forgets things that had happened in the recent past. This turns out to be a good thing for Peter, as he is able to be friends with Harry again. MJ also finds solace with Harry, when she feels really lonely. After a misunderstood kiss, Harry is agitated and when he returns to his room, he regains his memory.
Meanwhile, an escaped convict trying to gather funds for his daughter's operation ends up in a particle physics experiment facility and is reduced to 'sandman'. He uses his new found ability to appear out of sand to get the cash for his daughter. Spiderman manages to stop him.
Peter and Aunt May discover that the man responsible for Uncle Ben's death is not the one, but it was actually the escaped convict that Spiderman stopped. Peter is filled with vengeance again. Although MJ tries to help him, he brushes her off.
At work, Peter is competing with a new photographer Brock. He is ousted by him and now is left almost jobless.
Harry becomes a villain and decides to hurt Peter from the heart. He threatens MJ to break up with Peter. After she does, Peter is disheartened, but his strangeness makes him do weird things, that hurt both Peter and Gwen, another woman he tries to date, becoming into a playboy.
Eventually, Peter decides to get rid of the evilness and ends up near the bell in the church. With the bell ringing strongly, the evil gets off him, but onto Brock, who is witnessing the entire scene of Peter.
Harry and Peter have a serious fight and Peter injures him severely and leaves a burnt scar on one half of his face. MJ is captured by sandman and the evil thing that Brock had turned into. Peter goes to Harry for help, but he refuses. After Peter leaves, Harry's butler confesses that Harry's father's wounds seemed to come from his own weapons and not anyone else's.
While Spiderman is trying very hard to save MJ and keep the villains at bay, he is unable to do so and Harry comes in on time to save and with the duo, they manage to keep the villains relatively at bay. But in the end, Brock gets destroyed with the black evil thing. Sandman is remorseful about his state. Harry gets fatally hurt and Peter and MJ get together again.
Only while writing this I realized how many stories were going hand in hand and I have not still written all the stories. Anyway, the story was woven and Spiderman against 3 villains seemed an overkill and overemphasis on the skills of a strange teenage boy. The last 20 minutes of action and mushiness seemed a little stretched and I definitely was wondering how come the butler didn't mention about the wounds earlier. But certainly there were some cheesy mushiness at the scene about how the villain didn't choose to be who he was. I say all villains can say that and get away with it. It's rare to find 20 minutes of conversation between the good and bad guy explaining why he did what he did. Anyway, the movie was good for the special effects watch.

American Pie 1

This was probably one of the corniest movie I have ever seen in my life. There were a couple others that might come close, but atleast I got diverted by the humour in them, but this one seemed just catered to some craziness.
4 men, who are good friends, are worried that they would make it to college as virgins and they make a pact with each other to make sure that by prom night, they are not. Each one approached it in different ways.
Guy 1 didn't have a girlfriend. Apparently his tongue was always tied around girls and even when he got the chance to do it with someone, he blew it. He had a very supportive father, who talked to him about the seriousness and frivolity in the teenage years. He ends up finding a loquacious band girl for the prom date, whom he could barely stand, but holds up to. In the end discovers that she's in it for the same thing as him too.
Guy 2 had a girlfriend, but she was more into the emotional love aspect than the physical. Although he liked her, he is not able to commit to her emotionally. In the end, the girl changes her mind and they manage to do it on prom night.
Guy 3 tries his lines on his girlfriend and loses her, but with his exploration of his sensitive side, he manages to find a girl for himself. He really tries being sensitive and Mr.Nice. In the end, the girl falls for him and he falls for her and things fall well for him too.
Guy 4 is a nerd and tries to get girls by spreading 'positive' rumours about himself. He gets busted when one of the most popular jocks in school loses his prom date because of those rumours. He ends up with no date, but ends up having it with the same popular jock's mother.
At every point of the movie, I had to ask myself why I was watching it and most of it was just fast forward, considering more than half of it was just crude humour. I would definitely recommend to skip this movie.

Shall we Dance

Starring Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Jennifer Lopez, the movie is about a man who is exploring his liking in dancing.
The movie begins by showing how John Clark is leading the same life everyday and there seems to be nothing exciting in his life, until he notices a lonely face at the window of a dancing school. After many days of contemplation, he finally makes the move to enter the classroom, thinking he could just watch and he ends up signing up for the class, by the same woman, whose lonely face, he used to see at the window.
Dancing lessons begin and Clark meets a whole new world of people, that he keeps a secret from his family. A overweight friend, who wants to lose weight; a homosexual, who is in denial about his liking; a loud-mouthed stressed woman, who is struggling to make ends meet with her passion and finally, Paulina, the dance teacher, who always seems lonely.
At one point in time, Paulina tells him to come to the class if he is truly interested in dance and not her. Taking dance seriously, John returns to class and eventually, he is put in a serious competition with the other beginners to compete with many others. Paulina now trusts him with her story about how she was a great dancer taking part in the competitions, but a mistake cost her everything - her love and her dancing. But now, she wants to dance because of John and she thanks him for that.
Meanwhile, John's wife, Beverly, thinks that he is having an affair and hires a private investigator and when she finds out, she is relieved, but can't understand why he is not confiding in her. She too starts self learning dance.
On the day of the competition, everything goes well, until John realises that his family is watching him. He misses steps and embarrassment results. He tries to make up to his family by staying away from dance classes, but eventually, Beverly asks him to bid Paulina for the final adieu.
Finally, everything falls in place - Paulina takes part in the dance competition; John and Bev in a healthy relationship; the overweight guy getting married; the homosexual friend accepting who he is and the loud mouthed woman finding her true love.
Lopez really seemed angry almost all the time. It made sense why she was angry in the present, but even when her past was shown, she seemed pretty angry and most of the time, her face seemed to show a scornish expression than sadness.
Gere was good at capturing his uncontrollable gaze at Paulina and the delicate embarrassments, when he blurted the wrong things out. Sarandon was really cute with the eyebrow raisers and blinking when she was confused. I have to give congrats to the guys who acted as the other new dance learners too. They did an awesome job of the little screen space they shared.
The movie moved fast and it wasn't soggy or too mushy. I haven't watched the actual Japanese version. Maybe that would give me a better idea of whether this movie was better than the original. But definitely worth a watch.

Over the Hedge

Over the Hedge is a movie about a group of animals trying their hand at living off the urban world.
An overly indulgent raccoon deprives a hibernating bear of his food stock, but the bear catches him and warns him to get his food back or be eaten alive, within a week. Armed with this mission, the raccoon makes his way to a little group of animals made up of a turtle, a skunk, a squirrel, a family of possum and a family of porcupines. He considers using them for his food collection.
Over the hibernating season, apart from the immediate area of where they were hibernating, the rest of the greenery was removed to make way for the urban townhomes. The animals are amazed at the hedge, whom they call as 'Steve', until the raccoon introduces them to the urban lifestyle.
Although the raccoon doesn't tell them about his personal mission, he makes them gather the food that he needed to please the bear. Over the course of this gathering, the animals were put through many dangers and troubles, but they escaped. Close to the end, they are seriously captured and the raccoon, having gathered what he needed, leaves them in captivity.
Although he returns the stuff to the bear, he is overburdened by guilt and takes the food away to help the animals. In the end, the animals get together and the bear is caught and even the food has now been stored, by the hyperactive squirrel.
An OK movie to watch. Sometimes, I found myself wondering why I was watching the movie. It wasn't entirely engrossing and humour wasn't as strong to keep me glued. Worth a watch.

Van Helsing - The London Assignment

Taken out the comics, this movie takes us through another devil hunting journey of Van Helsing.
Many young women are murdered along the streets of London at the darkest hour of the night and Van Helsing is sent on the mission to stop the devil by the Vatican. The Vatican suspects the working of evil looking at the decomposing corpes, that seem to have lost their souls.
Van Helsing, with his trusted comrade monk tracks the problem down to the point that it is linked to the royal family - the Queen in some way.
Apparently the royal physician brings in medicine for the Queen in the darkest hour of the night and the Queen feels better, although she can't quite remember as to what ails her. The royal physician was a poor student of medicine, who was very much in love with the Queen in his younger days. Using his skills of science, he came up with a way to make her younger by taking the soul of younger women and putting it into her with the potion. At the same time, he takes a concoction that gives him superhuman strength to overpower any type of hindrances.
As Van Helsing is fighting the meek form of the physician, the physician is forced to drink the potion and become a monster. When the Queen sees the form, she is disgusted and leaves him. Van Helsing rescues the Queen and returns.
While at the end, it is shown the physician still lives..
An interesting movie. I have to say I found this version of Van Helsing much better than the movie with real actors. It seems less cheesy this way. And the tricks and action sequences are more believable in an animated environment compared to the real one. Worth a watch.

Written by Sidney Sheldon, the novel is the story of 2 women fighting against a power greedy man, for whom their husbands worked and were killed by.
Kelly Harris is happily married to Mark, while Diane Stevens is to Richard.
Diane is recently involved in a trial of a murderer and is worried her life would now be affected, but the bad news comes in a different route. Her husband is murdered and is considered to be having some sort of an affair with a mysterious Olga. The company he was working for, Kingsley International Group is also puzzled over his death, as Mark, another employee is also mysteriously dead, supposedly due to suicide.
Kelly Harris is devastated when she hears of Mark's death and she can't believe that Mark would be so unhappy to be committing suicide. She becomes hardened and being a popular model, shuts out everyone out of her life. Although she responds to Kingsley International Group's invitation.
Owner of Kingsley International Group (KIG), one of the largest think tanks in the world is Tanner Kingsley. He invites Diane and Kelly to meet with them. Once he meets them, he orders his thugs to kill them.
To maintain his soft image, Tanner keeps his handicapped brother, Andrew with him. Andrew was not always handicapped. An accident lead him to the present state. Tanner's true colours appear as they are in private.
When Diane leaves the meeting with Tanner, she waits until Kelly returns, as she realises there might be something fishy in the fact that both their husbands died while working for the same company. As they have tea together, an assault on both happens. Diane mistakes it to be the assault by the mob she testified against, but finds out that it wasn't them.
Although Kelly leaves Diane, she finds out she is being followed everywhere and returns to Diane to sort the fuss out. Eventually, they realise someone is out to kill them. Innocently, they inform Tanner their every move and at a point, they realise that it is him who is trying to kill them.
From then on, it is a wild goose chase. They escape every attack of Tanner quite close. Along the way, they also find out about other employees of KIG, who are also killed.
They decide to contact a big shot and attempt to speak with the senator, but unfortunately, that is a trap and by stroke of luck, they are spared alive and they escape.
Andrew's thoughts and memories return to him, as Tanner and his love are moving to their paradise and he destroys them with the same machine that Tanner was extremely proud of having.
A very fast paced and well written thriller. Definitely worth the read.

Fanaa

Starring Aamir Khan, Kajol Devgan, Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, with supporting cast, the movie deals with the terrorism involved in an independent Kashmir.
Devgan is the blind daughter of Kapoor and Kher, who live in Kashmir. The parents decide to let Devgan go by herself to the dance festival in New Delhi.
In New Delhi, Devgan meets the charming Khan, who is also instantly drawn towards her. After some days of hanging out together, Khan feels guilty about involving Devgan in his playboy life and tries to move away. But Devgan doesn't let go and in the end, Khan proposes to her.
As Devgan's parents arrive, Khan prepares for Devgan's eye operation and tells him to go to a specific location in New Delhi. When her operation completes successfully, she wakes up to a nasty truth that her fiancee is dead due to the bomb blast in the location she asked him to go. She is devastated.
Khan, meanwhile, is shown to be a very smart terrorist, who is fooling the Indian military. Although the anti-terrorist team tries to find him, they are unable to find his exact location, but with some information of an army man missing, they suspect it is the terrorist.
Khan assumes the identity of an Indian army soldier and steals an important part of the nuclear weaponry that his terrorist organization has planned to use in the war. As the anti-terrorist organization has found him, they track him down and attack. Khan gets injured and fate brings him to Devgan, his son and Kapoor, during a terrible snow storm.
They help him recover and because no one has seen his before, Khan stays in the house as an unknown guest, covering his passions and feelings. Over time, he becomes a part of their family and one day, he is unable to keep his true identity and spills it out. Although Devgan is mad at first, they marry and spend a few days together.
Meanwhile, there is news of a terrorist running in the news. Having found the weapon in Khan's possessions, Kapoor is cautious and tries to stop Khan the next day, but dies in an accident. With the lakes and rivers of Kashmir, the body of Kapoor floats around to where Devgan was with her son. As Khan returns home, anguish of Devgan is mistaken and he lies to her, without realising what she was going to say.
She too becomes suspicious and leaves him to contact the police. The government organization tells her to be careful and stop the terrorist if possible. Khan finds Devgan and tries to explain it to her. In the final climax, the family is broken apart.
Really awesome acting by both the stars. This was the first time they came together, and it was definitely a hit. One can't leave out Jatin-Lalit's (as pointed out by ADR) compositions - my favourites - chanda chamke, chaand sifarish, mere haath mein. Definitely a must watch movie.

1947 Earth

With Aamir Khan, Nandita Das, newcomer Rahul Khanna and many other supporting cast, the movie revolves around residents of Lahore during the partition.
Das is the nanny and servant in a Farsi household. The Farsi child enjoys Das' company with the other men, who are struck by Das' beauty. One of them is Khan, who is a trickster and an ice cream man. He earns his living many ways. He loves Das, but openly flirts with her. On the other hand, Khanna, the masseur, is more gentlemanly and after expressing his love for Das, she reciprocates.
At the time of the partition, there is unrest and violent feelings within the hearts of the people, who are bloodthirsty to avenge people of other religion. Considering Lahore was going to become part of Pakistan, all non Muslims are forced to move to India in some way. After a certain time, the rest of the non Muslims who are left, are killed and tortured.
Khan is vengeful and proposes to Das, but she refuses and later, Khan witnesses Das and Khanna in love. He becomes even more mad. In the climax and the final scene of twist, we can see him taking revenge.
Although the movie was seemingly crossing boundaries in Indian cinema, the last scene of climax itself was worth watching the movie. The passions and sensualities could have been more subtly shown and the involvement of a child in these scenes seemed really unethical. But an OK movie to watch for the concept and theme, definitely not with children though.

The Departed

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen, The Departed is the story of two moles, in the good guy's and the bad guy's groups.
Nicholson is a well known thug and Damon joins him as a little boy. Nicholson manages to convince Damon to becoming a cop and thereby instilling his mole in the state police.
On the other hand, DiCaprio, with a disturbed family history wants to become a real cop, but because of his history, Wahlberg and Sheen aren't too keen on letting him join but offer him the position of the mole with the big thug mobster. Without much option, DiCaprio agrees.
Over the course of the movie, it is cat and mouse game with the thugs and police, with the mobs getting away everytime. Finally, in a ironical twist, Damon is appointed to investigate the mole. To get rid of Sheen and to clear the way for Nicholson, Damon follows Sheen and Sheen ends up dying, with the news reaching the mobsters too.
After this, it is just a crazy mess up of all the facts and in an earnest effort to be himself again, DiCaprio tries to get away, but realizes Damon was the mole all along. DiCaprio dies in proving himself. But finally justice is delivered by Wahlberg.
A very interesting movie. Definitely worth the watch. DiCaprio has performed great as the very stressed mole and Wahlberg has done well in being the foul mouthed cop, making cringe sometimes, when he swore away as well. Although it did make me wonder what sort of cop would keep such as employee as his right hand.
