Written by Philip Dick, the novel is a science fiction about the time when androids, robots with human intelligence rule over the planet.
Lots of bounty hunters are now hired, with the sole aim of removing androids from the planet. The only difference between the humans and the androids is the presence of empathy in humans and androids lacking it. So begins the novel with a bounty hunter who is on the lookout for androids. He encounters a very gutsy female android, who tricks him into believing that she was unaware of herself being an android and he leaves her alone.
Meanwhile, he gets to other androids and along the way, gets a shock when he is taken to a police station, where nothing he knew exists and finds out it is another trick of the androids. By and by, some information about androids start coming about - how earth was made into a unlivable planet and because of that people started migrating to Mars. How androids were created to help out humans and how eventually they started taking over, but humans have now started to kill them again.
At the same time, another human - a chickenhead - a human with relatively low levels of IQ - is introduced as someone living outside the normal human civilization. Here is where some other androids take shelter.
After some interesting interactions between the female android, the bounty hunter and the chickenhead, the story ends with the androids being killed and bounty hunter going about his normal life.
The story seemed slightly inconclusive - but nevertheless, it was interesting to read this different kind of viewpoint about how the future could possible become. It was suggested to me by a co-worker, who is more interested in sci-fi novels than others. So although I was apprehensive of how it would turn out, it was a good read with the right elements of empathy and human touch.
