Gauravam

Nadigar thilakam Sivaji Ganesan in dual roles with Panribai, Nagesh, Major Sunderajan perform in this movie about an egoistic barrister.
Barrister Rajnikanth is a very successful lawyer, who has never lost a case in his life. He has great pride about it and his ultimate ambition is to become the judge. Repeatedly, he is overlooked for that post, which makes him take up a criminal's, Mohandas', case which created much commotion amidst the lawyers, as Mohandas was truly a criminal. As usual, he wins the case and Mohandas promises to lead a good life henceforth.
A twist of fate ends up putting Mohandas at crime scene, that he didn't commit, and this time, he runs to Rajnikanth to save his skin and he agrees to help him again.
To protect prevalence of justice, other lawyers convince Kannan (Rajikanth's nephew who is being brought up as his son) to take up the case against Rajnikanth, as a public prosecutor. The disagreement between the uncle and nephew widens. Some evil characters around the house, make use of this opportunity for their benefit and deepen the rift.
As the case proceeds, an unexpected evidence against Mohandas crops up and now it is almost certain that Rajnikanth has lost his case. The judgement is reserved for the next day. Rajnikanth doesn't attend the next day, but gets the news that he has lost.
Kannan is excessively pleased and happy at the decision. He considered his uncle as his God and rushes home to get his blessings and give him the news that finally Rajnikanth has become the judge, but reaches home to find his uncle dead.
Gauravam literally translates to respect, but in Tamil, it is also used in other aspects to denote ego and pride.
An excellent performance by Sivaji and there was the difference in portrayal between the nephew and the uncle. Major had a small role to play and it wasn't memorable either. Nagesh's comedy was great and him teasing Chellama's uncle was very funny. The actor who played Chellama's uncle also did a good portrayal of what he ought to have. Panribai looked very sweet and homely as usual.
All songs were tolerable, but some that stuck in my mind were yamunaa nathi ingae, neeyum naanumaa and paalooti valartha kili. These were good tunes and very much filled with good thought. A good movie worth the watch.
