kumudam

Starring S.S.R., Vijaykumari, Soukar Janaki, Rangarao, M.R.Radha and many others, kumudam literally means a flower and it is the name of Soukar in the movie.
S.S.R. is the brother of a poor blacksmith, who works hard to help S.S.R. become literate. The brother also has a daughter, who is almost the age of S.S.R. To help save funds, he moves into the outhouse of a rich lawyer, Rangarao, with some lying (by the order of the rich lawyer).
Rangarao's daughter, Vijakumari, finds out the truth that S.S.R. isn't married and slowly they fall in love. Her parents support her too.
Meanwhile, S.S.R.'s niece falls in love with M.R.Radha, who had no intention of marrying her. S.S.R.'s brother's health deteriorates and he dies. S.S.R. vows to help his niece first before his own marriage.
When he extends the alliance to M.R.Radha's family, they tell him of their younger daughter, who is blind (Soukar) and agree to the marriage, only if their daughter is wed by S.S.R. Heartbroken, S.S.R. agrees to it and the marriage takes place.
After marriage, S.S.R.'s sister finds out that her husband in a bad man and is sad. S.S.R. isn't happy either, but Vijaykumari helps him do the right thing and is a frequent visitor to their place. She is also studying to become a barrister.
During S.S.R.'s and Soukar's happy times, they visit Mahabalipuram, where both of them end up to witness a murder by M.R.Radha. Soukar hasn't seen him, but felt him step on her hand. S.S.R. owns up to the murder because he wants his niece to live happy. Vijaykumari takes up the case on his behalf.
S.S.R.'s niece finds important evidence against M.R.Radha and provides it to the court and judgement is pronounced.
Although the movie was a little slow paced and M.R.Radha's squealing was a little unbearable, it falls fresh on the ears with the clear Tamil pronounciation and a reasonable storyline. Some parts of the murder investigation seem a little outdated and weak, but was strong enough in those days. Most of the songs by K.V.Mahadevan were wonderful. My favourite - kallilae kalaivannam kandaar was one of the best. Other commendable ones were kalyaanam aanavarae, ennai vittu, miao miao.
