The Small Bachelor

Written by P.G.Wodehouse, this is another masterpiece comedy. George Finch, Molly Waddington, Sigsbee Horatio Waddington, Mrs. Waddington, Lord Hunstanton, Butler Ferris, Hamilton Beamish, Madame Eulalie a.k.a. May Stubbs, Frederick Mullett, Fanny Mullett and Inspector Garroway form the list of characters in this comedy of marriage and love misunderstandings. It is wonderful how the story has been intricately weaved to include each one of the list of characters and still have the story flow as though it met no slow standing point.
A shy artist, George is heads over heels in love with Molly. Mrs. Waddington, Molly's stepmother likes her elevated status and wants Molly to marry Lord Hunstanton. Sigsbee H. Waddington, as he is addressed for most of the movie, is a man, who loves the West and is living in his wife's shadows fearing her wrath. Mrs. Waddington tries every way possible to stop the marriage of George and Molly. Ferris works as a butler at the Waddington home.
Hamilton Beamish lives in the same apartments as George Finch. He writes many instructive books and believes in carrying out every task with efficiency. He knows Molly since youth and agrees to help George, when he finds out about his love. While travelling to Waddington home, he falls in love at first sight (something he doesn't believe in) with Madame Eulalie. Madame Eulalie is Mrs. Waddington's fortune teller. She also shares some interesting twisty past with George.
Frederick Mullett is George's butler and he is in love with Fanny. He is a reformed criminal and wants Fanny to do the same. But her attraction to her old job lands her in some soup with the Waddington marriage affair, owing to much displeasure and misunderstandings.
Amidst all this, Inspector Garroway is a learning poet, who takes his lessons from Hamilton Beamish.
The style of writing is hilarious and way Wodehouse winds the plot is engrossing and lovely. Definitely a masterpiece.
