Starring makkal thilakam M.G.R., Devika, Master Kamalhassan, Sahasranamam, Veerappa, M.R.Radha, Anandajyothi is produced by AVM, music by mellisai mannargal Vishwanathan - Ramamurthy.
The movie begins with the introduction of a poetry loving lady and her teacher loving little brother. Then the movie moves to show love between the poet Manikam (a.k.a Anand) and the lady, Jyothi. She is in the dark and when she comes to light, she is angry at him, but love doesn't fail. Anand, meanwhile, resigns from his job, which was drill master (physical education teacher) at Jyothi's father's school.
A villain from Jyothi's childhood enters. A flashback ensues to show how Jyothi's father had resorted to wrong ways to get the wealth he has now and how Anand is the rightful owner of the wealth. The villain starts to run the house by threatening the father.
The villain is also the head of an illegal smuggling group. As one of the detective finds out their hideout, he runs for his life, ends up in Anand's house, dying there and spilling some secrets he had found about the smugglers. The killer of the detective was none other than our villain and he places the blame on Anand such that the police start hunting for him.
With the minimal secrets, Anand escapes from law to stop the illegal activities, but is hurt instead. Now, he lives as a convict at large. With some kindness from Jyothi and a student's family, that he helped before, he is able to find the smugglers hideout, but is captured along with Jyothi. He escapes again, and with a web of tricks, fight and swimming, the villain is captured. And the movie ends by showing the married life of Anand and Jyothi.
As usual, it was a fast - paced M.G.R. movie with all elements of romance, patriotism, samaritanism, comedy and action. A character to look out for is Jyothi's younger brother, who is Kamalhassan in his younger days. I could almost see the initial base for the actor today.
I have always liked M.G.R. in his black and white movies, in which he looks quite dashing. He comes in a few disguises, which again seem to suit him well.
The songs in movie are very melodious and poetic to listen. oru thaai makkal has the patriotism, poiyilae piranthu is flirty, ninaika therintha is for a broken love, kaala magal is for the broken hope, pala pala is for the philosophers and finally, pani illatha is for the wooers.
Thankfully, there wasn't too much sentiment with crying scenes and mother sentiments. A good movie for a relaxing afternoon.
