Starring a dynamic couple Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta with supporting characters Boman Irani, Sushant Singh, Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri and guest appearance with Amrish Puri, Lakshya or ambition is a story of a boy growing into a man in a patriotic backdrop.
Karan Shergill is a happy-go-lucky boy, without any worries or troubles until his girlfriend's father asks him about his future plans. His girlfriend and other friends seem to have their plans and he seems to be lost. This is where the classically choreographed song Main aisa kyon hoon starts. The song was choreographed by Indian Michael Jackson Prabhu Deva. The song has an attitude and rhythm to it that is contagious.
During his random outings with his friends, one of them says he is joining the army and Karan without having plans of his own, follows the suit. He gets admission and attends the Indian Military Academy. Within a few days, unable to bear the excessive seriousness and discipline, he runs away.
His parents had always compared Karan to his elder brother, who was a successful businessman in the U.S., especially his dad who never physically supported Karan in any of his endeavours since his school days. Romi's encouragement and Karan detest of his parents' constant comparison had kept him going to IMA.
When he runs away, he finds out his dad's true feelings about him - disappointment and his girlfriend, Romi, refuses to see him anymore because he is not true to his decision or word. Heartbroken, Karan returns to the institute, a changed man. He works hard and graduates as an officer. He is then posted to a location near LOC - Line of Control - the divider between India and Pakistan.
Romi, meanwhile, gets a position with a leading TV company, becomes a reporter, gets engaged to a businessman she met on one of her shows and then breaks off the engagement because of differences. She comes to the same station as Karan for TV reporting. The meetings between Romi and Karan were nicely shown.
With the LOC, it is found that Pakistani military posing as common men have taken over land beyond their LOC - land of India. To get this back, a series of missions are drawn, of which the final one is successful at the cost of many Indian soldiers' lives.
The film ends with reconciliation of Karan with his father and Romi.
The film is warm and patriotic. Roshan has done a good job in the portrayal of the carefree man and then the brooding soldier. Zinta carries her role with ease as a purposeful reporter. Some of the dialogues are very enriching, especially the dialogue between Om Puri and Hrithik Roshan about war and land.
The songs are fresh and to the point. For choreography, main aisa kyon hoon was the best, while kandhon se kandhae milte hain was very patriotic to listen to. An awesome movie to watch although I have to warn there are some scenes of crying sentiments in it.
