Starring Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson, this classic adaptation was a total musical.
Although most of the story was followed, the intensity and passion of the phantom wasn't felt as much and neither did I feeel the innocence portrayed by Christine Daae. In the novel, the phantom wears a complete mask to hide his disfigured face and in the movie, only about 1/4 of his face is disfigured. I guess the director used the rest of the face shown for displayed the emotion.
It seemed as though the actions of the phantom were more subtle and quieter than the one portrayed in the movie. It seemed like the phantom seemed more human - people wouldn't have believed that the phantom in the movie was actually a phantom.
Most of the dialogues were sung and that was sometimes really annoying. I would have rather had them speak it out. It takes longer to finish a singing line!
There were some parts of the movie where they had added some fantasy and taken some characters away- such as Madame Giry seemed to me like a slightly slow character, but in the movie, she seemed to be all knowing and sneaky. Two characters from the book were merged into one.
On the whole, it was a good show with exquisite sets and costumes. I loved the opera decorations - very grand and beautiful. A good movie and a must-see for music lovers.
